Influencer marketing is no longer something you can ignore or play trial and error with. It is a mainstream branch of digital marketing and is no longer optional, no matter the brand.
The word influencer has been around for a few years now, but many marketers and their brands are unclear on how to tap into this market to reach demographics that are still out of sight for them. Well, there is a first time for everything, but that doesn’t mean you go into it blind.
Hopefully, this book will give you a taste of the world you are about to enter. Let’s begin.
Chapter 1: Introduction
As the word suggests, an influencer is a person who can persuade their followers to change their behavior, which gives them a certain amount of control over the purchasing power of their audience on any given social media platform. There are three types of influencers on the internet today and it depends on the size of their followers.
Micro influencers have less than 10,000 followers and can help reach a specific niche audience. This might be a small club but the audience loyalty is strong.
Power middle influencers have less than 250,000 but more than 10,000 followers. They are not as big as international celebrities but have a considerable amount of influence over their followers. These influencers also have partnered with brands in the past and have some of that commercial experience.
Macro influencers are the third kind and have more than 250,000 followers. Typically, they are YouTube or Instagram celebrities and have a huge following. But it is possible that they don’t have the same level of credibility as power middle influencers, which means their impact in terms of changing buyer behavior won’t necessarily be directly proportional to the size of their following.
To begin with, influencers came into existence because it is an incredibly difficult task for brands to get and hold the attention of users on social media. As Aaron Sorkin puts it, this “theatre of short attention span” is a hard one to capture.
It is also because there are a number of brands with an online presence and the competition is quite fierce. With everyone bombarding customers with their products and services, it has become hard for users to make a decision. And the amount of self-promotion brands do, hasn’t helped their case much either because this has only made the customers skeptical.
So, there came a need for an innovative marketing strategy that did not include them talking about themselves. In short, they needed someone that customers would trust to give them a thumbs up. While celebrity endorsements have been around for that same reason, some influencers are more authentic with their followers for the sake of their own credibility. This has led to brands and influencers joining hands to make the best of the situation.
But every marketing strategy needs a plan and as popular or effective as an influencer might be, they are not the exception to this rule. Influencer marketing can achieve some very specific goals that are beneficial to both parties.
Chapter 2: What Is Influencer Marketing?
Now, we’ve gone through who an influencer is and how your brand can benefit from collaborating with them. But let’s spend a minute on understanding the concept of influencer marketing as a whole. For starters, this is not a new concept at all. If you are an established brand with a big budget, you have probably been doing this all along in the form of celebrity endorsements.
You pay a famous person to put their vote of approval on your brand and compensate them for it. It is one of the most traditional ways of marketing a product or service. But here’s the kicker. It is different from influencer marketing in more ways than one.
Customers are moving away from traditional marketing because they understand that celebrity endorsement is a marketing strategy and doesn’t actually mean that the celebrity recommends or has even used the product or service they are endorsing. That’s why they are more inclined to find fresh voices on the internet. Voices that are talking about the product or service after giving it a go. This channel of voices used to come in the form of reviews on platforms like Yelp.
But, over time, they have started making the same associations with their favorite influencers on these platforms because that follower base is more often than not filled with people who either have the same questions as the individual or the answer to their questions. Influencers are also perceived to be regular people, unlike celebrities who are likely to be from a different class of people than the guy on the street.
So, here are a few ideas in any brand’s starter kit when it comes to collaborating with an influencer on a social media platform.
Paying the individual for sponsored posts that are clearly marked as such.
Giving them exclusive access and striking a deal with them to post X number of reviews which increases brand awareness and reach.
Give influencers merch or discounts on merch and getting an honest review
This is a huge financial bargain compared to traditional channels of advertising, not only because the terms and conditions can be adjusted depending on the goals of a specific campaign, but also because influencers are all about flexibility. Even when their focus is on making money, they strive to stay authentic with their followers. This is why your (potential) customers might be inclined to doubt big celebrities but will trust social media influencers who they perceive to be more like themselves.
Now, it is important to remember that some collaborations are not going to get you tangible results, meaning they will help you improve your brand recognition, which cannot always be measured. You might end up making 10 videos with an influencer instead of a short television ad. But rest assured that your influencer is likely to get you more engagement than the television advertisement.
In the introductory chapter, I also touched upon the importance of picking the right influencer for your brand. This is an interesting aspect of influencer marketing. Now, these minor celebrities can be found anywhere on the internet. That is part of the thrill and the challenge of finding them.
Typically, what makes them an “influencer” is the size of their following on social media. But that size can vary from hundreds to millions of followers. So, don’t get hung up on the numbers alone. Don’t count on their accounts being exceptionally jazzy either.

If you don’t want to end up like this, then you need to start taking measures right now. Here are 5 easy techniques you can use to get out of your comfort zone:
Say ‘Yes’ More Often
In this context, saying ‘yes’ means being open to new opportunities, new ideas, new perspectives, and new challenges. It means saying ‘yes’ to things that will ultimately bring you out of your comfort zone and help you reach your dreams.
When you say ‘yes’ to new experiences, you may feel intimidated at first. But sooner or later, it’s going to get your adrenaline going. When you succeed and conquer these new challenges, you’ll feel a high like no other. It’s something you will never experience while you’re trapped inside your comfort zone.
When you take the bulls by the horn, and you succeed, you gain a lot of self-respect and self-confidence. You begin to see yourself in a different light. You’re not such a failure after all. And you begin to see the future in a more positive and more hopeful light.
Now, learning to say ‘yes’ doesn’t mean agreeing to everything and everyone that comes your way. The word ‘no’ is equally important as ‘yes,’ and you should know when to use both words properly.
When you say ‘yes’ to people and things who aren’t going to help you grow, then you’re not helping yourself. Saying ‘yes’ to people who want to take advantage of you is a recipe for disaster. Agreeing to do things that go beyond your moral boundaries and your values will only make you hate yourself. You’ll lose self-respect and your self-esteem.
Before you say ‘yes’ to anything, check first if it falls within your boundaries. If it does, then ask yourself how you’re going to benefit from the experience. Will you be more productive? Will you gain new skills? What will you stand to gain? You may be uncomfortable with trying out new things, but as long as you don’t violate any rules and you don’t hurt other people, then you should go for it.
Don’t be afraid to say ‘yes’ to trying new things. Don’t be afraid to say ‘yes’ even if you’ve failed before (perhaps you can do things a bit differently this time and try to avoid doing the things that lead you to your past failures). Don’t be afraid to say ‘yes’ to redeeming your past failures and salvaging your dreams.
Take Baby Steps
Stepping out of your comfort zone can be a daunting task, especially if you haven’t attempted to step out in many, many years. However, it’s not too late. For as long as you’ve got life in you and the strength and energy to pursue your dreams, you can still make a go for it.
Taking baby steps mean not rushing into trying new things. You don’t want to do everything all at once. For most people, rushing into things is a scary concept. Some people can stomach the thought of doing that, but the majority will be scared.
So, to make it easier, you can take small steps out of your comfort zone. It’s like taking one foot out the door first and looking around. When everything looks clear and you feel safe, you take another step forward. You can do the entire process of furtively looking around, making sure no one’s going to come at you to tackle you to the ground, for as long as you need to.
We all do things differently – some like to rush, some like to take it slow. Whatever floats your boat as long as it gets you out of your comfort zone.
Small victories count. It doesn’t matter how small you think it is, but as long as you’re making progress, then you’re doing great. It’s what all of us did when we were babies – we first learned to crawl on our bellies, then on our hands and knees, before finally attempting to stand up and learning to walk on our tiny feet.
You may not remember the number of times you’ve fallen. But I’m sure you can imagine your parents cheering you on from the sidelines, happy with every little progress you made. And you imagine yourself smiling at them and clapping your chubby little hands, looking mighty proud of yourself.
You’ve come a long, long way since then. But here you are again taking baby steps. This time you’re doing it for your goals and for your dreams in life. You may no longer have the luxury of having your parents on your side, but you can still do it. Cheer for yourself and celebrate each and every milestone you tick off your list.
Meet New People
In many ways, your comfort zone is your prison. You do the same things with the same crowd, with the same people. You become so comfortable with the status quo that the thought of meeting and getting to know new people frightens you.
What if they don’t like you? What if they hate you? What if they talk about you behind your back? Negative thoughts about how other people are going to react to you are always on your mind. You don’t want to look like a fool in front of strangers, so you keep to yourself.
While it’s true you can’t predict how people will perceive you, you don’t have to be a hostage to other’s opinion of you. You can’t control their thoughts or their emotions. We’re all free to choose who we’re going to like.

If you want to make more money with your business, one good place to start is on your order forms.
Think about it…
You have a prospect with a credit card already in their hand. They’re in a buying mood. So there’s a good chance that if you put a related offer in front of them (the proverbial, “you want fries with that?”), they’ll take it. And that means you’ll make more money with every customer who walks through your door.
So how do you create a backend or upsell offer that gets your prospects clicking the “Yes” button? Like this…
1. Make Sure the Upsell Enhances The Main Offer
The very first thing you need to do is make sure any upsell offer is tightly related to the main offer. In fact, not only should it be tightly related, ideally your upsell should enhance the use or enjoyment of your main offer.
Take the classic example at a fast food restaurant. I guarantee that if you walked into McDonalds and ordered a hamburger, any well-trained clerk would ask if you wanted fries and/or a drink with that. And a lot of people say yes to this offer, because fries and/or a drink enhances the enjoyment of the burger.
Now you can do the same thing, no matter what you’re selling. For example:
You’re selling a meal-planning app. Offer a low-fat cookbook as an order form upsell.
The main offer is a copywriting course. You can offer personal copy critiques on the backend.
Your main product is all about setting up and running a successful blog. You can offer tools on the backend, such as a package of useful WordPress plugins and professional themes.
Your main product is a “how to get out of debt” course. You can offer an upsell that includes items such as a debt-management workbook and personalized debt-management counseling.
You main product is a set of kettlebell training videos. You can offer the kettlebells themselves as an upsell.
In other words, don’t just toss any ol’ offer in front of your prospects. Be sure your upsell and main offer go together like… well, like hamburgers and fries.

2. Offer an Irresistible Deal
Dropping a related offer in front of your prospect is great. But turning that offer into an irresistible deal is even better.
Take the fast food example again. If you order a burger with a small fries and drink, the clerk will ask you if you want to “biggy size” the order for just a small extra charge. The deal is irresistible. You get a LOT more food for just a tiny bit more money.
No matter what you’re selling, you can do the same thing. For example:
“I usually charge $997 per month for this sort of coaching. But as a valued member of my new copywriting club, you’ll get a special price of just $497 per month for this same high-quality coaching…”

3. Use Short-Form Copy
You’ve got an eager prospect sitting in front of your order form with their credit card in hand. Now is not the time to put another long sales letter in front of them. They’re eager to buy. Putting another wall of text in front of them might just have them hitting the back button and abandoning the order form!
You see, you’ve already done the hard work of getting them into the necessary emotional state needed to make a purchase. You’ve already built your credibility. You’ve already established trust. You don’t need to do these things again.
So what you need to do now is simply focus on the benefits of the upsell offer. In fact, your upsell may be nothing more than a benefit-driven headline, a list of benefits, and a call to action.
TIP: As always, test to find out for sure what your audience responds to the best. Test different headlines. Test your bulleted list of benefits. You might even test short-form copy against a short sales video.

4. Frame The Price
The next thing for you to remember is that you’ve already sold your prospect on purchasing the main offer. They’ve already agreed to whatever price you’re charging. So when you extend the upsell offer, you’ll want to frame the price so that it focuses on the upsell only.
Let me give you an example…
Let’s suppose you’re selling a home study course for $99, with an upsell offer for $25 for an app:
When it comes time to ask for the order, do NOT do this: “Would you like to add this offer to your order for a total of $125 for the course and app?”
Suddenly that sounds like a lot. The prospect is going to start second-guessing their purchase. And you could lose the entire sale.
Instead, focus on the upsell price only: “Would you like to add this app to your order for just $24 more?”
Ahhhh… that’s better. That sounds doable. And since the prospect is already planning on spending $99, that extra $24 doesn’t sound like any big deal.
It’s all in how you frame it.

2. Make A Commitment

Things begin to get shaky when the reality finally sinks in that you’re embarking on a life-changing mission. A mission where you’ll need to give up your comfort zone and do things you’re not used to doing. A mission where you’ll need to learn new skills and maybe dive into the deep end of things just so you can reach your ultimate destination.
It’s the commitment to change that will help you find success. When you embrace change, literally nothing can faze you. You’re expecting both good and bad things to happen and you’re ready for whatever may come your way. You’re ready to make sacrifices in order to achieve your goal. This is the kind of mentality that will get you over to the finish line!
3. Broaden Your Horizons
Broadening your horizons will allow you to see the world in a different light. You’ll be more open to change, you’ll be more open to diversity, and you’ll be more open to new ideas. You’re not going to be a bore when you talk to people.
You’ll no longer feel like a fish out of water in social gatherings. You’ll have more opportunities to meet new people and foster new relationships. You’ll also be more adaptable to change and even difficult situations.
To help expand your horizon, you can read books or pick up new hobbies. Basically, try to learn something new every day. You’ll gather different ideas on how to approach different tasks which can help you get closer to your goals.
Not attempting to broaden your horizon will mean you’re going to be stuck doing the same things over and over. You’ll find it near to impossible to create a life of freedom because you’ll be trapped in your comfort zone. But if you’re well-versed and knowledgeable about many things, you’ll find the confidence to go out into the world and work on achieving your dreams!
4. Get Rid Of Your Debts
Being free does not necessarily mean being wealthy, but it sure wouldn’t hurt. One thing that can drag you into the depths of despair is debt.
If you’re buried in a mountain of debt, you’ll find it extremely hard to live the life you want. You’ll have your conscience and various collectors hounding you for payment. That’s no way to live!
Skipping town is always an option, but a very bad one at that. You’d ruin your name and your reputation, and it’s going to be hard to live freely with your integrity ruined.
