Most of our problems in life come from the fact that we either agree to too much or we refuse things that we later repent. Though we may be highly educated, there is one department that most of us are lacking in… that of saying yes or no at the right place.

The other extremity could be a problem. There are some people who refuse almost anything. They have paranoia about accepting anything. Refusal is their default reaction. This could be their undoing though, because by unthinkingly refusing everything that comes in their way, they are probably losing out on a lot of opportunities. They are failing to notch up experience and goodwill. They are keeping themselves away from self-development and they are earning much negative press in the process because people usually do not like being refused something.

And then, there are times when we have a single obvious answer between yes and no, and we know that the answer we are giving out is definitely going to hurt the other person. But, we have no alternative. There is nothing we can do. What do we do in such cases?

We need to learn how to accept anything in an elegant manner. We should not take up too much and we should not take up anything that is against the principles that we have set up in life. At the same time, we should make sure that when accepting something, we are getting what we want out of it… whether it is monetary compensation or creative satisfaction or goodwill or whatever it is that is our motivation at the moment. We should also make sure that we are not coming across as too desperate when we say yes to something. Even though we may be blessed with amazing talent, if we are too desperate, then people develop a low opinion of us.

Saying no requires some special skill as well. Most importantly, we must do our best to make sure that the person we are refusing doesn’t take it too hard. There should be no bitter feelings because that can create a lot of unwarranted problems in the long run. We need to justify our stance when we are refusing something. We should tell them what the reason is, and, if possible, give them an option by which they can get their job done. That usually takes care of the bad feelings part because the person whom you have just refused understands that you have not done it out of spite or because of a grudge that you have with them.

You need to learn how to strike the right balance. Between saying yes and no, there are a lot of things that you have to consider—a lot more than what you probably are considering right now—and when you eventually give your answer, you have to make it sound right.

There are times when you will have to give a quick answer. For instance, if someone you are visiting asks you to stay for dinner, you have to give a quick answer. The answer has to sound genuine and still you have to take care you are not doing anything that you do not want to do. This requires you to quickly understand the different parameters that you should think of when agreeing to or refusing something and give prompt answers that ring true.

Self-discipline is, without a doubt, one of the most important life skills everyone, and I mean everyone, should have. There are, of course, plenty of other essential life skills everyone should master such as people skills, time and money management skills, survival skills, professional skills, communication skills, and more.
Read the last sentence again. Do you know what all these other skills have in common?

If you answered self-discipline, you’re absolutely correct! You need to have the discipline to effectively master many different life skills. Skills that are important for your success at work, at school, at home, or anywhere else for that matter.

Now, achieving self-discipline is not easy. Don’t trust anyone who tells you that. To achieve self-discipline you need to have the ability to control your emotions, your body and your mind.

It’s the ability to rise beyond your weaknesses and be strong enough to resist temptations that may come your way (and you will have plenty of those, trust me). If you think doing that is easy, then you’re probably superhuman or maybe even a robot!

We may not share the same weaknesses but as humans, we all have weaknesses. It could be something material or immaterial, it could be tangible or non-tangible, it can even be a living thing like other human beings or animals. Every time you see these objects, these weaknesses, your resolve weakens and you lose your self-control. In some cases, maybe even your self-respect.

Overcoming your weaknesses is necessary for you to be successful at disciplining yourself. Why? You simply don’t have a choice. Temptations and obstacles will litter your path to success and it’s important you avoid these at all cost! If you fail, if you give in to your weaknesses, then you’re also going to fail big time on self-discipline.

If you’ve always wanted to achieve or excel at something, such as in sports, academics, arts, music, and more, you need to have the self-discipline to go after what you want, to chase after your dreams. You don’t just sit around and wait for something to happen. Because nothing will happen. You have to put in the work, most probably over a long period of time, so you can achieve whatever it is you’re aiming for.

Chapter 1 - What Is Your “Why”?

It’s very easy to say you’re going to accomplish something, anything, in the next 12 months. You can say you’re going to be 20 pounds lighter or you’ll be living in Europe after a year or you can even say you’re going to find the love of your life soon and tie the knot in the next 12 months!

Profile: Barack Obama, Former President of the United States There is no denying that former president Barack Obama is successful. Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and many more well-known names can be found making time each day for exercise and taking care of their physical and mental health. Here are six habits that successful people do to maintain their health and improve fitness.

Habit 1: They get up early

You’ll notice that among successful people, one of the key factors that they all share is the propensity to get up early. There are a lot of advantages to getting up early. There have been dozens of studies that have linked getting up earlier with getting more accomplished. Even if you aren’t a morning person – like Barack Obama – you still should consider getting up a couple of hours earlier. You might find that you have time to get more done and will get even closer to your goals.

Habit 2: They work out consistently

Another thing that successful people share is consistency. This usually extends to all areas of their lives, but it is especially true in the case of exercise. As a rule, successful people tend to exercise several times a week. They are not only very committed to it, they make it part of their schedule and work around the workout. Doing this has a couple of benefits. Habit 4: They equate fitness with success

Successful people don’t think about fitness as a chore or something that they need to do to impress anyone else. They equate fitness with being successful. There is no doubt that the two are related and that’s why they make this a priority, getting up early in the morning to work out, or making fitness one of the things that they work on no matter what else is going on.

In addition, you will notice that successful people are able to kick most of the bad habits that are out there.
