You may not be familiar with the name Stella Liebeck, but you’re almost certainly familiar with her story. Stella is the lady who became famous after she sued McDonalds because she spilled hot coffee on her lap. While driving her car.

Stella has become the ‘poster girl’ for everyone who is driven to distraction by the ‘sue nation’ we’ve become. However, there’s a little more to Stella’s story than meets the eye… Firstly, Stella didn’t just suffer from the short-term discomfort that we might normally associate with spilling hot coffee. The fact is, coffee that’s served at about 185° Fahrenheit (79° Celcius), as was the case, will result in serious burns in a matter of seconds. The coffee you have at home, on the other hand, is usually about 135° Fahrenheit (57° Celcius), which won’t immediately burn you.

Secondly, Stella tried to settle for $20,000 at one point, but the ‘Big Mac’ refused. This made Stella unhappy so the case went ahead.

Thirdly, despite what you might think, Stella didn’t receive ‘millions’. The final settlement was $640,000. And, when you consider that she had big medical bills to pay, it no longer seems quite so excessive.

BUT, she had that coffee open on her lap while driving. It’s her own fault! Well, despite what everyone seems to think, she wasn’t actually driving. Yes, she was in her car, but the car was stopped.

And, besides, the jury took this into consideration when making the final award. They estimated that Stella was 20% responsible for what happened, so they reduced the compensatory damages portion ($200,000) by 20%. So you see, the much-vilified Stella is not quite the silly, ridiculous, overreactive, take-no-responsibility-for-my-actions type of person that the media portrayed her to be.

Despite the fact that “it’s kinda obvious when you think about it” shaving body hair does not, as many people believe, make it grow back thicker or coarser. But don’t take my word for it, here’s what renowned dermatologist Dr. Jerri Hoskyn of the University of Arkansas has to say about it…

The important thing I want to stress is that “good” marketers are “great” at 1 or 2 areas here. But “GREAT” marketers only have to be “GOOD” at ALL of these areas. So if you want to be a great marketer, you need to have an understanding of each of these 5 categories and make sure you are effectively using them in your marketing. And when you become great at all of these, you stand alone in your industry as the 800 pound gorilla.

Now, here is a caveat. I do NOT want you to think that you can implement everything here. You simply cannot. Even the best companies in the world are not hitting everything. That is why there is ALWAYS room to improve no matter what business you are in.

You need to focus on the “Low Hanging Fruit.” Let’s face it, it does not matter if you are a closet warrior or Google, you are only limited to the resources you have at any given time. You can always grow your business and take advantage of more resources. As Lexus says, “The Ultimate Pursuit Of Perfection.”

But for now, what do I mean by low hanging fruit? Well, if you have a basket and you are all by yourself, does it make sense to climb a tree to get the small lemons at the top, which can take hours and hours, when you can fill your basket in 20 seconds with big, fat, ripe, juicy lemons that you can reach by just grabbing the low hanging lemons right in front of you.

You may say, “But Mike, isn’t the goal to get all the lemons?” I will say to you, NO! The goal is to get the best lemons you can as quickly as possible with the current resources you have. Once you sell those lemons, reinvest some of your profits to maybe get some more tools and helpers and one day not only will you get every lemon on the tree, but you will be working on every tree on the farm. Then next, you branch out to more farms and so on and so on…

Keyword research This is probably the most important step in your ranking strategy. I am assuming here that you have a general knowledge of working with spreadsheets. If not please Google on how to use them. Download and install a free program called Open Office (or you might have Microsoft Office, which is a paid program, installed already).

Try to identify keywords with at least 1,000 searches per month and with less than 50,000 competitor pages for the “Phrase” option. If you go after these types of keywords it will greatly increase the chances to get your video on the first page of Google.

I would also like to address here the approach of finding so-called video retainer keywords. The idea is to type keyword candidates into Google and see if there are videos on pages 1-3 of the Google results. If videos are there then you are likely to rank your video on one of the first Google pages too. Conversely, if there are no videos then you should avoid such keywords.

Taking into account my own experience and the fact that Google’s algorithm always changes, my opinion is that it is often not the case. Therefore, while I agree that this is a valuable strategy I personally do not make it as one of the most important considerations.

Keywords starting with “how to” are very good candidates for ranking videos on Google.
