Now, if you’re like me, you are thinking “What the heck are Goals and Funnels and why would I want to add more confusion to what I already have?” Well it just depends on the level of tracking that you wish to perform and what your website is set up for.
If your site is set up strictly for content and you’re only interested in knowing about your visitors, where they come from, what pages they visit and how long they stick around, then you’ve probably set up as much as you need to.
But if your site is set up to guide visitors through a ‘process’ or a series of pages (this would be your ‘funnel’) to ultimately end up at a ‘goal’ page such as an optin or a download page, you may want to track exactly how that visitor travels through that funnel to see exactly how many make it all the way to the goal page.
And, for those that don’t make it all the way to conversion, this gives you an avenue to find out exactly where they are dropping out or losing interest. With this information you would know exactly where something might need to be fixed or split tested for better results.
A good example of this would be if your site was set up where a visitor first comes in by whatever means to an opt-in page, signs up for an incentive, gets presented with a One-Time-Offer, accepts or declines, goes on to a thank you page and eventually a download of the incentive.
